There appears to be a significant shift taking place in the conversation around menopause. What was once a taboo subject is now being discussed more openly than ever before. Dutch celebrities and doctors are writing books on the topic, new legislation is being proposed, and informative apps and websites like this one are gaining momentum. This is precisely what we’ve been waiting for.

It feels like a release from the ignorance and frustrations that have surrounded menopause for so long. Increasingly, companies, doctors, and governments are recognising the importance of paying greater attention to the symptoms associated with menopause.

Integrating menopause into society

Gynaecologist Dorenda van Dijken is set to commence a major menopause study in January 2024, working alongside a team of scientists from various hospitals, (government) organisations, and patient associations. One of the aims is to explore how menopause can be better integrated into society.

Menopause and work is another key area of research. At present, it’s unclear what the most effective solutions are. Hormone therapy is not a one-size-fits-all answer. Perhaps other adjustments in the workplace are needed. Starting the working day later, for instance, or initiating conversations with women at an earlier stage; these are all possibilities being considered.

The study will span six to eight years. I think this is fantastic news. My generation is actually the first to participate so actively in the workforce. For future generations, we must ensure they are better prepared.

New forms of hormone therapy

New forms of hormone therapy are also emerging. For example, the NK3R antagonist is an intriguing newcomer. It’s a non-hormonal treatment that has proven effective against hot flushes and night sweats. Unfortunately, it has not yet been tested on women with breast cancer, for whom a non-hormonal option could represent a significant breakthrough. Additionally, a new pill combining natural oestrogen and natural progesterone is being introduced. Such a combination has not been available until now.

More support for menopause

If you look at global trend reports for 2024, menopause is frequently highlighted. The prediction is that more products and services will be developed to help women navigate menopause successfully. Personalised support is also expected to gain popularity. In short: menopause is becoming a hot topic! That calls for a toast (one glass of champagne should be fine).
