What is Alli orlistat?

Alli orlistat is a weight loss aid designed to support individuals who are struggling to lose weight. During menopause, 60–70% of women experience weight gain. Orlistat can be used as an adjunct to a low-calorie diet. It works in the intestines by reducing the amount of fat absorbed from your food. The unabsorbed fat remains in the intestines and is excreted through your stool. This results in fewer calories being absorbed, thereby aiding weight loss. Additionally, it can improve levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Orlistat is hormone-free and does not interfere with your hormonal balance.

This medication is suitable if you have a BMI of 30 or higher and diet and exercise alone have not been effective for weight loss, or if you have a BMI of 28 with additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or elevated cholesterol.

What can you expect from Alli orlistat?

When should I use Alli orlistat?

Take one capsule three times a day with your main meals.
Skip the capsule if you skip a meal or if the meal contains no fat.
Be mindful of the risk of fatty stools if you consume excessive fat.
It is effective only when used alongside a healthy diet.
Not suitable for long-term use without medical supervision.

For which conditions should you use Alli orlistat?

For overweight or obesity (BMI of 30 or higher, or 28 with associated risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes)

It may also assist with:

Elevated cholesterol

Do not use Alli orlistat if you:

Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Are allergic to orlistat or any of the other ingredients.
Have chronic problems with nutrient absorption (malabsorption syndrome) or gallbladder disorders.
Are taking medication to prevent organ transplant rejection (ciclosporin) or blood thinners (acenocoumarol or warfarin), unless otherwise advised by a doctor.
Are using other weight loss medications.
Consult a doctor if you are taking medication for diabetes, high blood pressure, or thyroid conditions.

Possible side effects of Alli orlistat

Most side effects are related to the fat that is not absorbed and is excreted through the stool. These symptoms are most common at the beginning of treatment and often diminish over time.

Common (affecting more than 1 in 10 users):

Flatulence with or without stool
Sudden or fatty diarrhoea
Abdominal pain
Oily or fatty stools

Uncommon (affecting fewer than 1 in 10 users):

Loose stools
