What is Estriol?

Estriol is a vaginal tablet that contains the bioidentical hormone estriol. This hormone closely resembles the natural oestrogen produced by your body. During and after menopause, oestrogen levels decline, which can result in symptoms such as vaginal dryness, itching, and discomfort. Estriol helps to relieve these symptoms by improving the health and elasticity of the vaginal lining. This hormone replacement therapy is available only with a prescription.

For which symptoms is Estriol used?

Vaginal dryness and recurrent yeast and urinary tract infections
It may also assist with urinary incontinence and vaginal discharge

Do not use Estriol if you:

Are allergic to estriol or any of the other ingredients
Have or have had breast cancer or another hormone-sensitive tumour
Experience unexplained vaginal bleeding
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have severe liver conditions
Have or have had blood clots
Are taking other medications that may interfere with hormones; always consult your prescribing doctor in such cases

Possible side effects of Estriol

Common (affects 1 to 10 in 100 women):

Local irritation
Itching
Burning sensation
Discharge

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 in 1,000 women):

Skin rash
Tender breasts

Rare (affects fewer than 1 in 1,000 women):

Allergic reaction
Swelling
Severe itching

In rare instances, serious symptoms may occur, such as sudden swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. If these occur, seek immediate medical attention.

Oral and transdermal hormone replacement therapies may carry certain risks, such as an increased likelihood of breast cancer, particularly with long-term use or for women who commence treatment later in menopause. However, for vaginal tablets, there is no evidence of these risks, as the medication works locally and does not enter the bloodstream.

Risks of hormone replacement therapy

The use of medication containing hormones can carry risks; however, this does not apply to vaginal hormone replacement therapy. Vaginal administration of hormone replacement therapy is entirely safe and free from risk because the hormones are minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. Studies indicate no increased risk of thrombosis, strokes, or cancer.
