Nitrofurantoin works by eliminating bacteria in the bladder. It is available in capsule or tablet form. Most people notice an improvement in their symptoms within a few days.
When should I use Nitrofurantoin?
Nitrofurantoin is typically taken 2 to 4 times a day, as directed by your doctor. Please note: Nitrofurantoin is only effective if your kidneys are functioning properly.
For recurrent bladder infections, your doctor may prescribe nitrofurantoin as a maintenance dose.

For which symptoms should you use Nitrofurantoin?
- (Recurrent) bladder infections
Do not use Nitrofurantoin if you:
- Are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any other components of the medication
- Are pregnant in the last month or breastfeeding
- Have severe kidney problems
- Are taking medications that may reduce its effectiveness (such as probenecid or sulfinpyrazone)
- Are hypersensitive to other nitrofurans
You may drive unless you experience side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness.
Inform your prescribing doctor if you are taking other medications or have impaired kidney function.
Possible side effects of Nitrofurantoin
Common (affecting 1 to 10 out of 100 people):
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
Occasional (affecting 1 to 10 out of 1,000 people):
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Skin rash
- Itching
Rare (affecting fewer than 1 out of 1,000 people):
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
- Liver problems
In rare cases, these side effects may lead to severe symptoms, such as significant shortness of breath, jaundice, or persistent tingling. Always contact a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

Based on your answers, a doctor will prepare a treatment plan for you within 48 hours. If you approve this plan, a pharmacy will dispatch the products to your home within 3 days.

Are there delivery charges?
For prescription medicines, delivery is included in the price. For over-the-counter products, there is a delivery charge of £4.21. We offer free delivery on orders over £40. If your order includes both, delivery is free.
Can I change, cancel or return my order?
Unfortunately, once an order has been placed, it cannot be changed. If you have ordered the wrong product, or wish to change or cancel your order, please contact our customer service team immediately. Over-the-counter products can only be cancelled if they have not yet been prepared or dispatched by the pharmacy. Prescription medicines can be cancelled if they have not yet been assessed by a doctor. Returns are only accepted for over-the-counter products in their original unopened and undamaged packaging, within 14 days of dispatch.
